Introduction

BIM technology is a diverse field, with many players and solutions. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to understand what BIM is or isn’t. In this post, we’ll explore some common misconceptions about BIM technology and help you understand how they relate to the products that you use every day.

Models that contain 3D data only and no (or few) object attributes

A model that contains 3D data only, with no (or few) object attributes and no intelligence at the object level is an example of a BIM model without any information integration capability. Such models can only be used for graphic visualizations, but provide little or no support for data integration and design analysis.

Models with no support of behavior

This is a very common mistake made by many people who are new to BIM. They think that if they use Revit, SketchUp or some other software that has a 3D component then they’re using BIM technology. However, this is not the case!

The term “BIM Technology” specifically refers to models that utilize parametric intelligence which allows users to make changes quickly and efficiently while maintaining consistency among all project components. Models with no support of behavior do not fall under this definition and they should not be referred to as such!

Models that are composed of multiple 2D CAD reference files that must be combined to define the building

If your model is composed of multiple 2D CAD reference files that must be combined to define the building, then you are not using BIM. This will lead to uncertainty and a high degree of error as each file contains only one small part of the overall design.

Models that allow changes to dimensions in one view that are not automatically reflected in other views

  • Models that allow changes to dimensions in one view that are not automatically reflected in other views.
  • Models where you can change the shape of a wall and have the length of all walls reflect that change.

Conclusion

We hope that you now have a better understanding of what BIM technology is, and what it’s not. BIM technology is not just 3D models; it’s much more than that. It’s the ability to create and share information in a way that allows everyone involved in a project to work more efficiently together.
